Subject: MESSAGE FROM SECRETARY CHERTOFF: VETERANS DAY
MEMORANDUM FOR: Department of Homeland Security Employees
FROM: Secretary Michael Chertoff
SUBJECT: Veterans Day 2007
On Veterans Day, November 11, we recognize and thank the extraordinary men
and women who are serving or have served in the Army, Navy, Air Force,
Marines, and Coast Guard. We salute those who are confronting our
adversaries abroad and those who have served during times of war and peace
to ensure our liberties.
I am proud to say that nearly 90,000 veterans continue to serve their
country as part of the Department of Homeland Security. This includes more
than 40,000 non-active duty veterans, and almost 41,000 active duty and
8,000 reserve U.S. Coast Guard men and women. In addition, more than 340
veterans and 160 civilian employees are on military furlough serving on
active duty in Afghanistan or Iraq helping our country in the global war on
terror.
The story of one veteran, Petty Officer 1st Class (BM1) Wilger Irizarry,
illustrates the commitment our veterans bring to DHS. Wilger entered the
United States from Cuba in 1994, along with his wife, newborn daughter, and
other family members, following a Coast Guard interdiction that saved their
lives. Once they were permitted to legally enter the U.S. and begin a new
life, Wilger enlisted in the U.S. Army and served for four years with the
82nd Airborne Infantry at Fort Bragg, N.C., and in Korea. When his
enlistment expired, he spent almost a year in the Army National Guard then
enlisted in the U.S. Coast Guard. Although he hasn't been stationed at a
unit that conducts interdiction operations, he knows that he can handle
doing that, and said, "All of my life, I was taught that Americans are bad,
evil, and immoral. The first thing an American did for me was save my life."
Whatever their service, in combat or support functions, on active duty or as
reservists, during peace time or war, we owe these brave men and women a
debt of gratitude. I encourage you to reflect on their service and to honor
them through your participation in one of the many Veterans Day events
taking place throughout the Nation.
